The Unrealistic Expectations and Gender Roles of Valentines

Adriella Torcato Santos, Staff Writer

Valentine’s Day is one of the few holidays in which many religions and countries celebrate. It is the day to celebrate the ones you love. Valentine´s day is something that gives people a break, in the middle of a work/school year, it is a day when you can buy yourself or the ones you love presents without being too pressured to do so. I think that this holiday is very cute, but it does set up unrealistic expectations and different types of gender roles to which people are supposed to conform too.  In many young girls´ eyes, them asking a boy to be their valentine is seen as weird. In young men’s eyes, they are seen as a coward if they are a little afraid to ask a girl to be their Valentine.

In many of probably your favorite rom-com or romantic movies, it is usually the man who asks out the girl and buys her flowers, and it is usually the girl who is shown swooning, screaming into her pillow. It is usually the man who proposes and the woman who cries, falls on her knees, and sobs, saying yes. Although there are a few negative aspects to this global holiday, you should still make sure to celebrate. Take the day to give extra love to yourself, your love, and your loved ones.
